“THE MEN OF THE 371ST”

They are perhaps one of the most successful military groups in World War I, but many people in the United States have never heard of them. And several of those called to serve were from right here on Daniel Island and the Cainhoy Peninsula. Who were the men of the 371st “Colored” Infantry? Why were they sent to France during World War I? What happened while they were there in battle, and what didn’t happen when they came home? For the answers to these questions and more, join the Daniel Island Historical Society on Tues. February 17, as we welcome as guest speaker someone who has a very personal connection to the story.  U.S. Navy Petty Officer (RET) Perry W. James, whose grandfather Sgt. Perry “Rawhide” Loyd was part of the 371^st, will share his research and discoveries about these brave men, as well as his monumental sojourn to France to honor a promise to his mother.
