“Handing Down Charleston: The Charleston County Will Books, 1671-1868.” From its founding in 1671, through the immediate aftermath of the post-Civil War period up to 1868, we will explore the estate inventories and wills of Charleston, transcribed by the WPA in the 1930s. These volumes offer us a better understanding of how the propertied landscape, wealth, and power were transferred in Charleston from one generation to the next. Our speaker will be Marianne Cawley of the Charleston County Public Library.
