“WHAT DO YOU KNOW?” TAKES A SUMMER BREAK

Our “What Do You Know?” local history quiz is taking a break for the summer.  Maybe just in time because this is the second consecutive round with NO correct answers!  The latest stumper:  What industry/building used to be located on Raven’s Creek (Raven’s Creek is between Barfield Park and the Sales Center – the boardwalk crosses over it)? Hint: There is a historical marker there.

The short answer is a rice mill.  The creek formed what was considered a perfect mill pond but both nature and technology eventually intervened.  The original water powered mill was wiped out by a hurricane in 1822 and wasn’t rebuilt because steam powered mills were practical be that time.

There’s lots more information about this mill and the history of rice mills in the Carolina colony at our “What Do You Know?” partner, The Daniel Island News.
