·      A Dive into Government and Election Systems

Hosted by League of Women Voters Charleston

Thursday, February 27, 2020 – 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM  Register at:   https://www.eventbrite.com/e/briefing-voting-methods-in-sc-tickets-94190260605

Dr. John Ruoff will brief LWV Charleston leaders on voting methods, including single member districts and ranked choice voting.

Dr. Ruoff, a voting and redistricting expert and principal of The Ruoff Group, will instruct and guide those attending about a variety of issues surrounding election methods. Our primary goal is to offer more familiarity about alternative voting methods that may increase citizen access to voting and provide a more democratic and/or efficient election process.

We plan to focus on:

·       general background on how one person/one vote principles are affected by voting structure

·       the proposed change of Charleston County School Board to single member districts

·       the possibility of changing the Mt Pleasant Town Council’s (and potentially other communities) election system from at-large to single member districts or possibly a blended model

We will also have an opportunity to talk about redistricting reform and answer other questions on election methods, including ranked choice voting.

The meeting is limited in the number of attendees. However, the League hopes the information gained through consultation with Dr. Ruoff will better prepare those attending to support future public information opportunities and forums.

The League of Women Voters Connects with Higher Ground and Dr. Steward Weinberg

Hosted by the League of Women Voters Charleston

Monday, March 2, 2020 – 6:00 PM – 7:45 PM                                            Eventbrite

Higher Ground adds an important voice to the climate justice conversation; Dr Stewart Weinberg will discuss their grassroots efforts here.

The rate of nuisance flooding quadrupled in Charleston since the 1960’s, according to NOAA, and scientists predict seas will rise another six inches in the next 13 years (SeaLevelRise.org/SouthCarolina). The City of Charleston says residents will experience 180 days of sunny day tidal flooding by 2045. This is bad news, especially for Charleston’s low income and disenfranchised residents living in low-lying, flood-prone neighborhoods.

Dr Stewart Weinberg is a leader with the Charleston Higher Ground organization, and is also a mentor for Climate Reality and a member of the City of Charleston’s Resilience and Sustainability Advisory Committee. He will discuss Higher Ground’s efforts to bring community members together to prepare for climate disruption and advocate for community-based changes that will make the Lowcountry more resilient.

Following Dr. Weinberg’s remarks, there will be an interactive discussion with attendees.

Admission is free.  This event is free and open to the public but is limited to 35 participants, so please RSVP.

Location:  Charleston County Public Library (Main Library)
