We have lost another very special person connected with Daniel Island. Rev. David Riley, featured in Mike Dahlman’s book, DANIEL ISLAND, passed away on Sept. 21.
According to the book, Riley (also spelled Reilly) was Simmons’ cousin and has relatives buried on the island in Simmons Cemetery. He worked for three decades to care for the four cemeteries on the island. He is also the great great grandson of Pvt. David Sparkman, who was a member of the US Colored Infantry during the Civil War. Sparkman is buried at Simmons.

Below are some photos Beth took at Simmons Cemetery in November of 2009, when a special ceremony was held in honor of military veterans buried at the cemetery…including Pvt. Sparkman, who had a new tombstone unveiled that day by Rev. Riley.
