The SC Archives & History Foundation will host the last program in the Virtual Spring Speakers Series 2021 on April 20, noon to 1:00 pm. Dawn Dawson House, of SC African American Heritage Commission, will present on “The Green Book.” The original Green Book was an African American travel guide to safe harbors and welcoming establishments across the United States, printed until the mid-1960s. And now the first mobile travel guide to African American cultural sites across South Carolina. Created by the SC African American Heritage Commission, it provides residents and visitors from around the world a user-friendly guide to discovering and celebrating enriching cultural experiences across the state of South Carolina. It is enhancing other programs like Black Carolinians Speak and the South Carolina Family Reunion Toolkit. The programs are free for SCAHF Members and $5 for non members. Register at

Professional Development Webinars for South Carolina Educators.The WeGOJA Foundation and the SC African American Heritage Commission are hosting a series of free professional development webinars for educators to help enhance their classroom instruction. The webinars provide easy-to-follow, curriculum based lesson plans, activities and resources for 3rd and 8th grade art and social studies. The material incorporates African American history and heritage into lesson plans and, through modeling, demonstrates how to address complex historical subjects in the classroom, like slavery and Civil Rights. The National Preservation Institute has launched a series of online training courses on a wide range of topics ranging from Section 106 to GIS to Historic Wood Windows to Streetscape Designs. Vernacular Architecture Forum, May 21-22, 2021, online. The Vernacular Architecture Forum focuses on the appreciation and study of ordinary buildings and landscapes in North America. NEW Association for Gravestone Studies Virtual Conference and Annual Meeting, June 18-27, 2021. The Association is accepting paper submissions on all types of research related to the study of gravestones, cemeteries, or closely related topics: preservation and management issues, carver studies, marker styles and motifs, interpretative programming, burial practices, historic surveys, cemetery histories, etc. The proposal form and additional information is available at https://www.gravestonestudies.org/conferences/annual-conference. Due April 15, 2021.
