There’s a great article in this week’s Daniel Island News titled “Historic treasures Tell Story of DI’s Native American Heritage” that recounts the thousands of years of that heritage. To see that article, CLICK HERE

Joshua Shumak also posted some information on our FB page: “The Ittiwan people, also spelled Etiwan, are a Native American tribe, who lived near present-day Goose Creek. Today, the Etiwan (Ittiwan) Tribe can be traced to the State recognized Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians. This tribal community is composed of many Native bloodlines including: Etiwan, Edisto, Catawba, and Cherokee that became part of the settlement. Sometimes referred to as Summerville Indians. They are located approximately 30 miles northeast of Charleston, South Carolina.”

Joshua also posted a link to a map showing more information about Native Americans in South Carolina. CLICK HERE
