As you know, our monthly meetings are open to all….part of fulfilling our mission to spread the word on local history. But membership, and membership dues, are vital to the continued success of DIHS. That’s why we try to have a steady stream of ‘members only’ events. In 2022 this has included the Robert Daniell Birthday Cruise and special tours including the Historic Venning Cemetery, the Charleston Navy Yard, and a sneak peek of the grounds of the as yet unopened International African American Museum in Downtown Charleston. Note…all of the links above include photo galleries.
The latest ‘members only’ event was a special tour of Middleton Place, a National Historic Landmark and home to the oldest landscaped gardens in America, led by DIHS member Gary Finch.
Tour participant Cheryl Eudy says “it was a marvelous time!” Hugh Haynsworth agrees, “The entire day was terrific. The highlight was Gary’s talk, titled Beyond the Fields, which gives an unvarnished presentation of the history of slavery at Middleton Place. Gary also surprised us with passes to the Middleton Museum. Then a few of us followed the museum tour with lunch at the restaurant.”
