HISTORY UP NEXT ON DANIEL ISLAND COMMUNITY SPEAKERS SERIES

The Daniel Island Community Speaker’s Series will continue on Wednesday evening, January 26 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.  The event will be held both in the ballroom at the Daniel Island Club and via a simultaneous Zoom presentation for those who may not be comfortable attending the event in person. Here are more details from Steve Slifer:

Betsy Cahill Kirkland

“Our speaker that evening will be Betsy Kirkland Cahill who is the Board Chair of the Preservation Society of Charleston.

One of the attractions for anyone who has moved to Charleston from elsewhere is the history of the city itself and the allure of the historic district with its collection of well-preserved homes.  Maintaining the city’s charm is an ongoing challenge.

The Preservation Society has been around since 1920 when a group of concerned citizens joined forces to save the 1802 Manigault house which had been slated for destruction.  Its mission today is to protect our city from the impacts of over-tourism, over-development and flooding.  In Betsy’s words, “Without the efforts of the Preservation Society there would be no Rainbow Row, no Manigault House, and none of the economic dwellings downtown where residents and visitors alike wander amid time honored beauty.”  Amidst its many successes there have been some irretrievable losses such as the Charleston Orphan House on Calhoun Street and the Quaker Burial Ground at the corner of King and Queen Streets.

Betsy’s passion for preserving Charleston’s  charm will make this a memorable evening for both you and  your family.

Betsy has an impressive resume.  She graduated from Ashley Hall.  She went on to Harvard where she graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in the classics.  She was then chosen as a Rhodes Scholar and spent three years at Christ Church College in Oxford.  Later she attended Yale Divinity School where she graduated summa cum laude.

For those of you attending in person the doors to the Daniel Island Club will open at 6:30 pm.  There will be a cash bar and passed hors oeuvres between 6:30 and 7:00 pm. The program will begin promptly at 7:00 pm and will conclude around 8:00 pm.
