HISTORY IN YOUR POCKET

If you think about it, you carry history in your pocket all the time…the faces of Washington, Lincoln, Franklin, Hamilton and others. But, true to much of US history, there was no recognition of women. That’s changing with the US Mint’s Women Quarters project, “a four-year program that celebrates the accomplishments and contributions made by women to the development and history of our country. Beginning in 2022, and continuing through 2025, the U.S. Mint will issue up to five new reverse designs each year. The obverse of each coin will maintain a likeness of George Washington, but is different from the design used during the previous quarter program. To see more CLICK HERE

The women honored will share the quarter with George Washington on the front and the women on the reverse.

The distinguished American women celebrated on the 2022 quarters will be:

Sally Ride and Maya Angelou

  • Maya Angelou – celebrated writer, performer, and social activist
  • Dr. Sally Ride – physicist, astronaut, educator, and first American woman in space
Wilma Mankiller

Following Angelou and Ride will be

Wilma Mankiller – first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation

Nina Otero-Warren – a leader in New Mexico’s suffrage movement and the first female superintendent of Santa Fe public schools

Anna May Wong – first Chinese American film star in Hollywood
