We will soon be electing a new slate of officers – President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer – to guide us into our next season and beyond. Each officer serves on the DIHS Board of Directors. We are in the midst of an exciting surge in momentum and can’t wait to begin doing even more to help share our island’s story with both residents and visitors!
Below is a list of officer descriptions, as well as descriptions for some new “Chair” or “Coordinator” positions we are adding to our team. Please take a look and email us at dihistoricalsociety@gmail.com if you have any interest in serving in any of the positions! We’d love to have you!
DIHS EXECUTIVE OFFICER POSITIONS:
President – Member of DIHS Board of Directors and also an Executive Officer. The President presides over the activities of the organization, overseeing all members of the Executive Board, and serves as the chief representative/spokesperson for DIHS. This position also oversees the Live Oak Campaign Coordinator and the Membership Chair.
Vice President – Member of the DIHS Board of Directors and also an Executive Officer. The Vice President plans programs and special events reflective of the DIHS mission, to include monthly programs with speakers during DIHS season of September – May, as well as other special events such as the Annual Live Oak Lights celebration and member-only programs. Can appoint a “Events and Programs” Committee to help with planning and execution.
Secretary – Member of the DIHS Board of Directors and also an Executive Officer. The Secretary is responsible for taking official minutes at all Board Meetings; filing official paperwork for the organization, such an annual charitable organization filing with South Carolina and any federal requirements to maintain non-profit/501c3 status; filing paperwork documenting board votes via email as necessary; maintaining the official files of DIHS; communicating with members and supporters as needed, such as group emails announcing programs and other activities, etc; and creating and distributing an electronic DIHS newsletter. Overseas PR/Media Coordinator and Website/Facebook Content Manager.
Treasurer – Member of the DIHS Board of Directors and also an Executive Officer. The Treasurer oversees all financial aspects of the organization, including monitoring income and expenses, writing checks as needed, the creation of an annual budget, reports to board membership, and annual IRS filings (thorough DIHS tax preparer Kim Fulp). Oversees Community/Outreach Coordinator position.
OPEN CHAIR/COORDINATOR POSITIONS:
Membership Chair (serves under President) – Oversees all membership activities, including membership recruitment, keeping membership directory/log up to date, and sending out welcome correspondence to new members (via template in Mail Chimp). Also helps coordinate volunteers for membership tables at programs and events.
PR/Media Coordinator (serves under Secretary) – Creates press releases announcing major eventsand programs and distributes to media; sends out monthly program announcements to media list; creates flyers/posters for programs as needed, creates blogs as needed for website. Takes photos as needed to provide with releases and for other content purposes, and provides those photos to the Website/Facebook Coordinator for posting to DIHS platforms.
Website/Facebook Content Coordinator (serves under Secretary) – Responsible for posting DIHS content to website and FB page, including content generated by PR/Media Coordinator for press releases and announcements. This person is also responsible for generating new content for website and FB page as needed, and for keeping both up to date.
