COMMUNITY PULLS TOGETHER FOR THE GROVE CEMETERY

The fate of the four cemeteries tucked away, usually out of sight, on Daniel Island is frequently complicated….legally, emotionally, logistically.  But a combination of community interests….the DI Historical Society, the DI POA, the local Rotary Club, the Shaw Family and even a local Boy Scout….have pulled together to help preserve and improve the Grove Cemetery, tucked away behind the Volvo Tennis Stadium.

Beautification efforts are currently underway at Daniel Island’s Grove Cemetery, an African-American burial ground located off the island’s trail system behind Volvo Car Stadium. Work at the site includes the construction of a new fence and entrance. Members of the Shaw family, who have ancestors buried at the cemetery, are working with the Daniel Island Property Owners Association and other organizations to improve the sacred site.
