The Daniel Island Historical Society rang in the New Year with some exciting news! In one of his first duties as the City of Charleston’s newly elected leader, Mayor John J.Tecklenburg proclaimed January 12, 2016, as “Daniel Island Live Oak Appreciation Day” in recognition of DIHS’s “tireless efforts to recognize and promote the arboreal residents of Daniel Island.” The Mayor’s action took place at the City Council meeting held on the same day. Accepting the proclamation was DIHS President Brenda Thorn, who has helped spearhead the organization’s efforts to document all Live Oaks on Daniel Island with a circumference greater than 8 feet, a requirement for membership in the national Live Oak Society (LOS). To date, DIHS has registered approximately 135 island trees with the LOS. The Mayoral proclamation showcased the Daniel Island Historical Society’s efforts to celebrate the island’s natural beauty and flora by cataloguing the largest Live Oaks in the community. The proclamation further stated that the trees are a valuable community asset that not only promotes good physical and mental health, but also increases property values. In addition, the trees were called “a source of joy and spiritual renewal” for the community. Joining Thorn in her acceptance of the proclamation on behalf of DIHS were City Councilman Gary White of District 2 and Chris Hamil of the Daniel Island Property Owners Association.
