Arbor Day 2024 Special Event

The Charleston Parks Conservancy has a great Arbor Day program to bring both tree education and actual FREE trees to Charleston area communities.  Since Daniel Island has a long and storied history at the center of early American agriculture and botany, and we have 50% of all public trees in Charleston–they’ve decided to “go big” with DI.

DIHS and DINA are partnering with Charleston Parks Conservancy for Arbor Day.  The Conservancy will be providing two 90-minute educational sessions AND free lunch in between.  They’ll lead a tree walk near the Rec Center and discuss the various trees and ways to identify them, AND they’ll have experts walk us through how to prune trees for success (with an eye toward equipping us to ensure and landscapers we work with are doing the best for our trees).

In between the sessions, our own Beth Bush will be speaking about Daniel Island’s history as relates to Early American agriculture and botany, and we have a special surprise “historical guest” that had been largely lost to history.  Beth will discuss Martha Daniell Logan’s childhood on DI, and her numerous subsequent contributions to both the study of botany and her role in Downtown Charleston’s most storied gardens and landscapes.

Finally, for those with an interest, up to 150 trees, up to 2/ea, will be given away to those who pre-register.  You need not attend the rest of the sessions to receive (up to two), but it would be lovely if you could learn, lunch and leave with a tree or two!
